In yet another act of defiance of the Supreme Court ban, people of Navalurkuttapattu in Tiruchi district conducted an unannounced jallikattu at the village on Tuesday.
A few bulls were said to have been let out in an open ground at the village in the afternoon. Watched by many spectators, a few youths chased the bulls in an attempt to tame the animals. The event reportedly lasted 30 minutes, sources said. As news of the event spread, police arrived at the spot but by then the event had ended.
The police directed some of those assembled on the ground to leave. Eye witnesses said about 20 bulls were let out. The Ramji Nagar police, under whose jurisdiction the event was organised, picked up a couple of persons from the village for holding the event defying the ban on Jallikattu.
The people of Navalurkuttapattu staged a protest in front of the police station condemning their detention, the sources said.
A few days ago, a jallikattu was organised at Anbil village in connection with the Pongal festivities. Police personnel were deployed in Lalgudi sub-division following the conduct of the event.
